A lot of emerging artists in the music industry do not end up making the kind of living that they thought they would. Whether you’re trying to land a major deal or just pay the bills, a lack of understanding of the business side of things will hinder you. Educate yourself about the music business and focus on building personal value to offer to companies and consumers.
Here are 3 mistakes most new artists make:
#1. Only Focus On Musical Skills And Songwriting
Let me be clear: musically talented people are a dime a dozen. The world is saturated with people that can rap, sing, produce, ect. What sets you apart from the rest? What is it about you that adds value to a brand? Set time aside to really learn the business. Find a mentor, and don’t make any assumptions.
#2. Being In Conflict With Your Interests
It’s tough. Don’t become a jaded starving artist who blames the industry and capitalism for their lack of success. People can taste the salt from a mile away. Companies will avoid you. Musicians who become successful understand that music is a business. They believe that they deserve to earn a living making music and are glad to work with others in the industry so that everyone prospers. Focus on developing a win/win mindset.
#3. Too Many Unknowns
It’s hard to get a job without verifiable experience and references. Just like in the real world, you have to build your resume. Make sure you are involving yourself in the scene and building a rapport with the industry while you build a fan base. Seek out ways to demonstrate your value.
